Germans cannot say goodbye to Merkel

After the September 26 elections, she will no longer run for political office

Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to say goodbye to her political career, but German citizens seem not yet ready for the resignation of the most powerful woman not only in the political history of Germany but also of Europe. While we are only a few days away from the elections, Germans appreciate the calm and its stabilizing influence in the country.

"She has really been an asset to Germany. I think maybe it wasn't easy for her at first, as the first female chancellor, I think people were skeptical. I remember experiencing the 2008-2009 crisis from Ireland and she was very well respected there and she managed this crisis very calmly. I think she did a good job."

Some young Germans said that despite four straight national election victories, Merkel has not done enough to address climate change, improve education or move Germany into the digital age. But despite her popularity there are those who think she could do better.

"I think the biggest topic is climate change and not only Merkel, but the whole government missed the moment"

On September 26, the new Bundestag is elected and Angela Merkel is no longer running. But as she leaves, the Germans are worried about who will take her place.

"Since I have been following politics, Angela Merkel has been in charge, as head of state. And I'm a little afraid of what's to come and I'll have to wait and see what happens. I mean so far everything has gone well, and what's coming now is so unknown and it makes me nervous."

Merkel has adopted a pragmatic, problem-solving approach to government, leading Germany and Europe through the eurozone crisis, the 2015 migrant crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic. Upon leaving politics, the 67-year-old will receive a pension of 15.000 Euros per month.
