The head of French diplomacy skeptical about the displacement of people from Kabul

France and Germany have proposed to talk with the Taliban in order to postpone the deadline for the relocation of foreign nationals and those who have worked with internationals in Afghanistan beyond August 31.

French Foreign Minister Le Drian, in a video conference with the French ambassador to Afghanistan, said that the main concern remained the approach to the chaotic situation at the Kabul airport. Le Drian said France was present at Kabul airport to help evacuate anyone potentially at risk in Afghanistan.

However, the head of French diplomacy emphasized that there is a fear that there is not enough time to complete the evacuations by the end of this month. French planes have so far evacuated more than 1.000 Afghans through Abu Dhabi, where Paris has a military base.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has also proposed that the US and its allies talk to the Taliban about extending the evacuation deadline after August 31.

US President Joe Biden has left open the possibility of US troops staying beyond the deadline to oversee the evacuations.

A Taliban leadership official said the foreign forces had not asked for a reprieve - which would not be granted if they had.
