Etna reaches its highest point after 40 years, the last eruption increases the height to 3357 meters

Etna has a "new" peak. The crater, which with the last deposition of pyroclastic materials and lava layers, rose to 3,357 meters.

These new elevation data are published in the weekly newsletter on volcanic, geochemical and seismic monitoring of the present-day volcano Etna.

The news comes from Ingv and is the result of examining the 'legacy' of approximately 50 paroxysmal episodes that have affected the volcano since February 16, leading to a visible transformation of the volcano's silhouette.

This is also the highest height of Etna for 40 years.

This historical data was obtained through the processing of two triplets of Pléiades satellite images.

Since 1980 the peak of Etna has always been considered the North-Eastern crater which, with the paroxysms of September 1980 and February 1981, reached a maximum height of 3350 m. This height, which has decreased over the years due to the collapse of its edges, in the summer of 2018 was set at 3.326 meters. But today we have news that this record has now been surpassed by the southeast crater cone and therefore Etna has a new peak.
