Turkish President: We are evaluating the Islamic group's offer to operate at the airport
The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has held the first talks with the Taliban in Kabul. He said Ankara is evaluating the Islamic group's offer to operate the airport.
The meeting took place in a military unit of the Kabul airport, where the Turkish Embassy is temporarily located.
"We held the first talks with the Taliban, which lasted three and a half hours. If necessary, we will have the opportunity to hold further talks", Erdogan said. Responding to domestic criticism of Turkey's engagement with the insurgent group, Erdogan said that Ankara "doesn't have the luxury" to sit idly by in the volatile region.
Turkey had planned to help secure and run Kabul airport, but a few days ago it began withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan.
Erdogan said the Taliban now want to oversee security at the airport, while offering Ankara the chance to run its logistics.
After the attacks that took place in Kabul, he said that Turkey will ask for more details on how the air base will be secured.
