The government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi is considering making vaccination mandatory

Italy joins the list of countries that have already decided a few weeks ago to offer the third dose of the vaccine because of the delta variant, which is more contagious than the others.

The news was made known by Italian Minister of Health Roberto Speranza. As predicted last week by Prime Minister Mario Draghi during a press conference, the minister declared that the country may soon make vaccinations mandatory for all Italians.

Draghi said Italians could be forced to take a dose once the European Medicines Agency (EMA) gives its approval for four vaccines. "Final approval by the EMA would make everything easier,” Speranza said.

Public Administration Minister Renato Brunetta said that if the country does not quickly reach a vaccination level between 80% and 90%, the government will pass a law to impose the Covid-19 vaccine on all people who are against it. By the end of this month, the government of Italian Prime Minister Draghi is expected to make a decision.

In the last 24 hours alone, Italy has registered 3,361 new cases of and 52 deaths from the coronavirus. The third dose of the vaccine is also authorized in Germany, France and the United States.

According to the National Statistics Agency, life expectancy in Italy - which ranks second only to Japan in terms of the largest proportion of elderly people - fell by 1.2 years in 2020 due to Covid-19.
