The fight against illegal immigration and border management were at the center of US President Donald Trump's speech on Wednesday night, in which he directly attacked Joe Biden, claiming that his administration had achieved "zero illegal entry" without the need for new legislation. At the same time, he claimed that the country has already started to lower prices, despite citizens' continued dissatisfaction with the cost of living.
Opening his speech, Donald Trump made a broad reference to immigration, claiming that in the last seven months “not a single illegal immigrant” has been allowed into the United States. “For seven months, not a single illegal immigrant has entered our country, which everyone said was absolutely impossible,” he said, attacking his predecessor, Joe Biden, for his handling of the border.
The US president reiterated that, contrary to what the previous administration had claimed, no new legislation was required from Congress to control the situation. “We didn’t need legislation. We needed a new president,” he said, adding that his administration had taken “the worst border in the world” and turned it into “the strongest in the history of this country.”
Immigration remains a central issue on Trump's political agenda, but according to a Quinnipiac poll released this week, 54% of registered voters disapprove of his handling of the issue, compared to 44% who approve.
The president also addressed his administration's strategy, noting that, unlike his first term, the emphasis has shifted domestically, with an increase in arrests and deportations of undocumented immigrants. According to the Department of Homeland Security, more than 605,000 deportations have occurred since January.
Donald Trump then focused on the economy, claiming that in a matter of months the country had gone “from the worst to the best,” citing a drop in prices for basic goods. “I’m bringing these high prices down and I’m bringing them down very fast,” he said from the White House, attributing the rise in inflation to the Biden administration and referring to an economic “chaos” that, he said, his administration is trying to fix.
At the same time, he promised new relief measures for citizens from 2026, referring to tax regulations approved as part of the Republican bill, which he described as "a big, beautiful bill."
In a characteristic excerpt from his statement, the Republican promised US military personnel that they would receive a bonus of $1,776 and assured that the US is "ready for an economic boom the world has never seen before."
The move is part of a broader White House effort to address voter dissatisfaction with the economy, which has hurt the president's approval ratings and worried Republicans ahead of next year's midterm elections.
But Trump has avoided acknowledging weaknesses in the economy during his term, saying inflation has “stopped,” even as prices have rebounded in recent months. He has attributed his economic success to his administration’s sweeping tariffs, even though there are signs that the trade policy has helped push up some prices and remains unpopular.
White House aides and Republicans have called on the president to show more empathy for Americans facing economic hardship. However, in his speech, Trump struck a triumphant tone, claiming that the economy had already been “saved” and that its path would only be upward. “Our country was on the verge of total failure. Now we are the most dynamic country in the world,” he said.
