Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has announced the extension of restrictions
Japan has extended COVID-19 restrictions in Tokyo and other regions until the end of this month to curb infections and prevent hospital overcrowding.
While announcing the measures, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the measure is necessary to strengthen a struggling medical system.
"Our ultimate challenge now is to prevent the collapse of the medical system, so I will urge the new administration to test and treat early for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditionsHe said.
Japan is battling the fifth wave of the virus. The number of severe cases and the burden on the health system continues to grip Tokyo and surrounding areas. The new measures are expected to last until September 30.
The restrictions so far have focused on the closure of certain premises according to certain schedules set by the local authority.
Citizens are being urged to work from home and avoid traveling as much as possible. In the last 24 hours, 1,834 positive cases of COVID-19 have been registered.
