The United States of America called on citizens to avoid Kabul airport, due to ongoing chaos outside the terminal.
A security alert issued this Saturday warned US citizens to stay away from “due to the security threat outside the airport perimeter". Only those people who have been told to go by a representative of the US government should go, the announcement said.
The warning comes at a time when thousands of people are trying to escape Afghanistan via the airport, after the Taliban seized power.
The militant group spread across the country and took the capital, Kabul, on August 15. Since that day, thousands of Afghans, as well as foreign nationals, have headed to the airport in an attempt to leave the country.
Every day, huge crowds of people gather in the hope of being able to fly by plane. Those working with the US and its allies, as well as people who have been part of human rights campaigns, fear they could face reprisals at the hands of the Taliban if they fail to leave.
According to what he writes BBC, what exactly is happening outside the airport during this Saturday remains unclear.
However, a Sky News correspondent said in the crowd of thousands at the entrance, there were people being "squeezed to death", forcing British soldiers to intervene to save those in danger.
The correspondent described this Saturday as the worst day yet and said he believed there were dead people at the scene.
Meanwhile, in a press release today, the US Department of Defense said that 17 people, including 2500 Americans, had flown from the airport./tvklan.al
