Income from cultivation, the main source for extremists
After taking power, the Taliban will not give up opium cultivation, as one of the most important sources of income to finance both their organization and the budget of Afghanistan during the years of their rule.
Different international analysts are of this opinion, who say that despite the fact that at the top of their agenda was the fight against the cultivation of this plant, the main ingredient for the production of heroin, the Taliban have done the opposite.
This graph shows that the cultivation of opium in Afghanistan did not decrease during their first rule, in the years 1996-2001, as for more than 30 years, this country is the largest grower of this plant in the world.
It only suffered a significant decline when the Americans intervened militarily to overthrow them from power 20 years ago. Since that period, opium cultivation has undergone significant growth, culminating in 2017 with almost 9 thousand tons produced in 1 year, as found in a UN report.
Opium has historically been cultivated in areas controlled by the Taliban, earning them up to $400 million annually.
