US Secretary: 12 countries will act as transit routes for evacuees

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken states that 13 countries have so far agreed to host, at least temporarily, evacuated Afghan refugees and that at least 12 countries have agreed to act as transit routes for the evacuees, including Americans and others.

Afghans will be temporarily housed in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Mexico, Poland, Qatar, Rwanda, Ukraine and Uganda.

The transit countries include Bahrain, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Qatar, Tajikistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and Uzbekistan.

"We are encouraged by the fact that other countries have looked at the possibility of providing assistance. We have no higher priority than the safety of American citizens abroad and the fulfillment of our promise to our Afghan partners at risk."

According to NATO, more than 18,000 people have been evacuated since Taliban militants took over the country's capital, Kabul.
