Josep Borell: But we will cooperate to support the Afghan population
The European Union will cooperate with the Taliban but under certain strict conditions.
This is what the head of foreign policy, Josep Borell, said, but he underlined the fact that the European Union will not recognize the new government of Afghanistan.
"To support the Afghan people, we will have to cooperate with the new government in Afghanistan, but this does not mean recognition. It is an operational cooperation".
During the conference with the foreign ministers of the bloc in Slovenia, he declared that the next steps of the European bloc will depend entirely on the behavior of the Taliban.
"We will judge the conduct and also the cooperation according to the Afghan government's commitment to Afghanistan not to serve as a base for the export of terrorism to other countries. Second, respect for human rights, especially women's rights, law enforcement and media freedom ".
He also said that the EU will coordinate "vigorously" with the US, G7, G20 and other organizations and that it will initiate a "regional political platform of cooperation” with the neighbors of the country.
