Concrete steps are required in the fight against arms and drug trafficking
The EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Ylva Johansson, has held a meeting with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the Interior of the EU and the countries of the Western Balkans.
The participants are discussing the implementation of the EU action plan 2020-2025 against the trafficking of firearms in South-Eastern Europe, as well as the implementation of the Regional Roadmap for their control.
Since the adoption of the roadmap in 2018, the European Commission has noted continued progress in the work done by partners in the Western Balkans in harmonizing legal frameworks with the rules on the use of firearms under EU and UN conventions.
Commissioner Johansson has noted an increase in operational cooperation and information sharing with the EU and with law enforcement.
The meeting, she said, is an opportunity to discuss further action on remaining challenges across the region, including gaps in criminal law frameworks and data sharing between law enforcement, courts and prosecutors.
