EU against a wave of migrants from Afghanistan

The Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Janša, said that the European Union will not allow a wave of migrants from Afghanistan.

Slovenia currently holds the 6-month EU presidency.

"The EU will not open any European humanitarian or migration corridor for Afghanistan. We will not allow the strategic mistake of 2015 to be repeated.", Jansha tweeted on August 22.

In 2015 more than 1 million people from the Middle East fleeing war and poverty arrived in the European Union.

The Slovenian Prime Minister announced measures to strengthen border controls while saying that the 27-member bloc will only accept individuals who helped the NATO mission in Afghanistan.

Thousands of Afghans are seeking to flee the country after the Taliban took control after a 20-year presence by US-led foreign forces.

NATO troops, including US troops, began withdrawing on May 1 this year.

The Taliban are urging people to stay in the country and have offered a general amnesty.

But Afghans fear their revenge and still remember the years of Taliban rule from 1996 to 2001 when human rights in Afghanistan were brutally violated.

The Taliban have closed key border crossings, but the EU is preparing to increase migratory pressure coming from Afghanistan in the long run.

Some EU countries are calling for refugees to be guaranteed security in neighboring Afghanistan, before the EU considers accepting migrants other than those who have worked with international forces and some vulnerable individuals.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who steps down after the September 26 federal election, last week called for coordinated EU action on migration. /REL
