Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Jansha: We will not open any corridor
The Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Janša, has declared that the European Union will not allow a wave of immigrants from Afghanistan.
"The EU will not open any European humanitarian or immigration corridors for Afghanistan. We will not allow the strategic mistake of 2015 to be repeated", Jansha wrote in a post on Twitter.
Desperate scenes of people clinging to planes taking off from Kabul airport have only deepened Europe's anxiety over a potential migrant crisis.
US and NATO allies are trying to evacuate thousands of Afghans, who fear they will be punished by the Taliban for cooperating with Western forces. But other Afghans are unlikely to receive the same welcome.
The Slovenian Prime Minister announced measures to strengthen border controls while saying that the 27-member bloc will accept only those individuals who have helped the NATO mission in Afghanistan. This line of the European Union is different from that of the head of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who earlier stated that it is a "moral duty" to help those fleeing from the Taliban.
Some EU countries are calling for Afghans to be guaranteed full security in Afghanistan's neighboring countries before the EU considers taking in Afghan citizens.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who steps down after federal elections on September 26, has warned that there should be no "repeat" of the 2015 migration crisis, when Germany took in more Syrians than any other Western nation.
