Central Europe against the reception of desperate Afghans
Every day thousands of Afghan refugees are arriving in Turkey from neighboring Iran. Meanwhile, Greece is strengthening and expanding its border wall with Turkey to prevent the entry of Afghan refugees into the European Union from Turkey. Brussels is now demanding that Ankara control any possible refugee crisis.
Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have opposed a decision for the EU to open its doors to Afghan refugees if there is an influx of people fleeing the country.
European countries fear that the scenario of 2015 could be repeated when 1 million people fled wars and poverty in the Middle East and the lesson of European countries.
The EU has accepted thousands of Afghan refugees through an evacuation organized by the United States, mainly people who worked with foreign forces in the country and their families.
Turkey has a refugee deal with the EU under which it accepted nearly four million Syrians who fled the civil war in exchange for billions of dollars in financial aid.
The European Union will demand from Turkey the same thing it demanded for the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015. So, this means that Turkey must continue to remain a country that serves as a repository for refugees.
Turkey hosts nearly four million Syrian refugees and 300,000 Afghans, in addition to migrants and refugees from other parts of the world.
The European Union has reached an agreement with Ankara to reduce the wave of migration in exchange for billions of dollars in financial aid and visa-free travel for Turkish citizens in the European bloc.
Turkey and Greece have recently tightened measures at their borders. Turkey has begun erecting walls on its border with Iran, as well as electronic surveillance systems, following growing concerns about Afghan refugees.
On the other hand, Greece is also in a state of readiness to prevent a new migrant crisis and has already completed the creation of a 40-kilometer long fence with Turkey, as well as a surveillance system to prevent the entry of asylum seekers.
Afghan refugees leaving their homeland cross the Pakistani border, then Iran and finally the Turkish border. It may take months for them to reach their destination.
The smugglers demand $1000 from each of them. Most say they were robbed along the way.
The path of these refugees continues towards western Turkey in the hope of finding a brighter future.
During the migration crisis of 2016, hundreds of thousands of people went to Turkey and then through the so-called Balkan route reached the richest EU countries.
