The European Union will return coronavirus vaccines produced in Africa and shipped to Europe by the manufacturer Johnson & Johnson.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged this at a conference in Berlin, said Strive Masiywa, the African Union's coronavirus commissioner.
Von der Leyen has promised to deliver an additional 200 million doses by the end of the year.
About 70 million doses of these will come from Germany.
"This is good news from Europe," said Masiywa.
In Africa, only less than three percent of the population is fully vaccinated, even as the continent is hit by a third wave of infections.
It is estimated that about 1.6 billion doses are required to vaccinate about 60 percent of the population in Africa.
The export of vaccine produced in southern Africa to Europe is arranged in an agreement between Johnson & Johnson and the African contract manufacturer, Aspen./REL
