The 20-year war in Afghanistan ends
The war that began against the Taliban 20 years ago ended on August 30, 2021 one minute before midnight local time in Kabul and the final withdrawal of the Americans. Paradoxically, the war ended with me cooperating with the Taliban, the main enemies in 20 years, who according to the Pentagon provided extraordinary help to secure the Kabul airport during the evacuation.
Thousands of troops spent a harrowing two weeks providing expedited and dangerous airlift of tens of thousands of Afghans, Americans and others who wanted to flee a country once again ruled by Taliban militants.
The Pentagon confirmed the departure of the last plane from Kabul and the end of the evacuation operation. According to General Frank McKenzie, who oversaw the evacuation of about 123 civilians.
Heavy gunfire rang out across Kabul after the last US plane left, as pro-Taliban forces celebrated the end of the war.
General McKenzie said the cost of the war had been high, with 2,400 American servicemen killed since 2001.
"Tonight's withdrawal marks both the evacuation of all US military personnel and the end of the 20-year war that began in Afghanistan shortly after the attacks of September 11, 2001,” General McKenzie said.
The military evacuation mission lasted 18 days with an average of 19 citizens evacuated in 24 hours.
Also, Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf confirmed the departure of the last American soldier and that the country regained full independence.
