The Philippines denied on Tuesday that there were any jihadist training camps in the country, following reports that the perpetrators of the deadly attack on Sydney's Bondi Beach had trained at a camp in November.
President Ferdinand Marcos "categorically rejects the misleading portrayal of the Philippines as a training center for the Islamic State," his spokeswoman Claire Castro told reporters.
"No evidence has been provided that the country is being used for terrorist training," she added, citing a statement from the National Security Council.
The Philippines admitted yesterday that Sajid Akram and his son, Navid, who killed 15 people attending a Jewish party on Bodai Beach on Sunday, had been in the country from November 1 to 28. The Philippine Bureau of Immigration had clarified that they had gone to Davao Region (southeastern Philippines), on the island of Mindanao, an area that partially escapes Manila's control and is suspected of housing camps of the Islamic State organization.
