The chancellor stated that cooperation is necessary for evacuations
Germany should cooperate with the Taliban regime. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is of this opinion.
"As for the Taliban, of course we have to talk to them because now they are in power. We want to get people out of the country who have worked for German entities, especially those who have worked for development organizations and who now feel threatened ", Merkel told reporters alongside her party's candidate Armin Laschet, who hopes to succeed the Chancellor in the next elections.
"International aid organizations must also be able to improve the humanitarian situation there", She added.
Merkel stated that it is a good sign that the airport in Kabul can be used for flights again.
A Taliban spokesman told a German newspaper that the group was ready for full diplomatic relations with Germany. He said that they have not "forgiven" German cooperation with the USA.
Earlier, the European Union has declared that it will cooperate with the Taliban, but this does not mean that they recognize the new government.
Their rule from 1996-2001 was marked by violent punishments and bans on education or work for women and girls, and many Afghan citizens and foreigners fear a similar return of their regime.
Militants say they have changed, but have not yet said what rules they will apply.
