US tech giant Amazon has removed more than 200 million fake product reviews from websites around the world over the past year as part of efforts to prevent and detect fraud and manipulation. Amazon has also announced that it is increasingly taking legal action against companies that sell fake or fictitious reviews.
The company says it now spends $700 million a year, worldwide, on employees and programs dedicated to preventing and detecting this type of activity.
Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos, is not the only company to crack down on fake reviews, although civil lawsuits against agencies that trade in fake reviews can prove difficult because they often operate overseas.
In early July, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos set a new record for personal net worth at $211 billion. Jeff, who makes more money every second than the average American worker makes in a week, has come under fire as thousands of workers at his company struggle economically.
