The US Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating possible deaths from COVID-19 vaccines in children and adults, a spokesman for President Donald Trump's health secretary, Robert Kennedy Jr., a notorious vaccine skeptic, confirmed to AFP on Tuesday.
The investigation comes as more and more voices are being raised to denounce the growing politicization of health services since Robert Kennedy Jr. took office, radically changing vaccination policy in the US.
"The FDA is conducting an in-depth study of potential deaths from COVID vaccines in different age groups," Andrew Nixon, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services, told AFP, confirming reports from Bloomberg and the Washington Post.
The effectiveness and safety of vaccines against the disease caused by the new coronavirus have been confirmed by various studies, as well as rare cases of serious side effects, which, however, did not call into question the benefit of vaccination for the majority of citizens of all age groups, according to health authorities in most countries of the world.
The spokesperson did not want to clarify when the conclusions of this study, whose methods are currently shrouded in mystery, would be made public.
The investigation, which was originally supposed to focus on possible child deaths, has sparked fresh controversy in recent weeks after an internal memo was leaked in late November. The memo, attributed to a senior FDA official, cited at least 10 childhood deaths linked to vaccines, without any evidence.
About a dozen former FDA officials have since expressed deep concern and urged caution, noting that “no explanation of the processes and analyses that led to this retrospective assessment” has been made public.
The Trump administration's health secretary, Robert Kennedy Jr., is known for spreading fake news and conspiracy theories about vaccines, especially these ones.
During the pandemic, he had claimed that these vaccines were “the deadliest ever produced” and had even gone so far as to tell the press, during an event, that the virus (ed. SARS-CoV-2) was “targeted” ethnically to affect whites and blacks, but not “Ashkenazi (Jews) and Chinese.”
