Child abuse, Apple postpones plans to scan iPhones

US technology company Apple has postponed plans for a program that would scan users' iPhones for photos or other material related to child abuse.

The reason is the reactions of groups opposing this initiative, with the argument that users' privacy rights are violated and that a dangerous precedent can be created.

Not only that, but critics also say that the application of this program can be abused by authoritarian governments.

The technology called "NeuralHash" will scan the images on the iPhone just before they are uploaded to iCloud. After checking against a database of abused children, if any photos with such content are found, they will be reviewed and the user's account will be disabled. Law enforcement authorities will then be notified.

But criticism of privacy violations led Apple to postpone the program.

"Based on feedback from customers, researchers and others, we've decided to take more time over the next few months to make improvements before rolling out this program", said an Apple statement. /tvklan.al
