India's southern state of Kerala has reported its first death from a new outbreak of a virus called Nipah after a 12-year-old boy died on Sunday. This new virus finds India in the midst of a new wave of Covid infections.
At least 2 health workers have been infected according to local reports. This is the first reported death from the viral disease in Kerala in 3 years, putting health officials on alert.
The disease is caused by consuming food that is contaminated by animals, mostly bats. The virus has a high fatality rate, from 40% to 75%.
Health officials are concerned about the source of the infection, which is a type of fruit in India that is consumed by local residents. 18 other family members have been identified as having had contact with the 12-year-old.
As a result, 15 other people who had contact have been quarantined. Health authorities are trying to identify the fruit the young man may have consumed./tvklan.al
