Methane gas explodes at a depth of 500 meters underground

At least 12 miners died in a mine collapse in Colombia after the underground shaft they were working in exploded as a result of a build-up of methane gas. The explosion occurred at the mine in Topaga, about 220 km northeast of the capital Bogota.

Rescuers are working to retrieve the bodies, but the collapse in the mine shaft is complicating their efforts. There are conflicting reports about how many workers were involved in this tragic accident.

The miners were working 500 meters deep in the mine when the explosion occurred from the accumulation of methane gas.

Such serious accidents are frequent in Colombian mines, which have lax safety standards. Illegal mining in particular is a problem in some Latin American countries.

In 2020, 171 people were killed in mining accidents in Colombia.
