$12 for a… grape seed? The record auction takes place in Japan

A bunch of grapes, of the "Ruby Roman" variety, was sold in Japan for 1,4 million yen (US$12).

The sale was made at an auction held in Japan's Kanazawa region at the start of the harvest season for a highly prized grape variety.

Taiwanese retail store owner Hsieh Ming-ta bought the first bistachio of the season for a record 1,4 million yen.

"I want to introduce this type of grape to Taiwan. It may seem like a lot of money,' but it's not when you consider all the effort and hard work the farmers put into the fields," said Ming-ta.

Japanese news agency Kyodo reports that a total of 253 pods were sold in the first harvest.

Grape growers in Japan are pleased with the yield, but also with the taste of the grapes, which are extremely sweet due to the sunny weather before the harvest.

The grape variety "Ruby Roman" is characterized by a low degree of acid presence and a high concentration of sugar, and for the first time it appeared on the markets of Japan in August 2008.
